Luncheon Session - Noon

The Lonely Gatekeeper
Penelope Burk
President, Cygnus Applied Research, Inc.,

  • Our luncheon speaker will be Penelope Burk, well known author and authority on fundraising research, training and strategic planning based on donor-centered principles.

  • Donors are exhibiting an independent streak like never before and, according to fundraising futurist and iconoclast, Penelope Burk, their actions are changing philanthropy forever...and for the better. In this provocative address, Penelope asks the question, "Is fundraising adapting itself to the new giving environment, or is it holding philanthropy back?"

  • Drawing from national statistics on philanthropy and fundraising and her company's ongoing research on donor behavior, Penelope will present a compelling argument for shifting the role of professional fundraisers from gatekeepers to customer service agents. And, she will outline how this new focus will make fundraisers easier for both professionals and volunteers while raising much more money.

About The Speaker:

  • Penelope Burk, author, trainer and President of Cygnus Applied Research, Inc., has over 30 years' experience in not for profit management, fundraising, marketing and research. A native of Montreal, Canada, her in-depth and varied career established her as a senior professional advocating innovative approaches to fundraising and marketing.

  • A highly sought-after presenter and researcher, Penelope has written over forty seminars for not for profit organizations. Her presentations are widely acclaimed as unique, engaging and among the most effective training programs in the sector today.

  • Penelope’s leading edge research in donor communication resulted in the publication of Donor-Centered Fundraising, in 2003. The book is the only statistically based research ever published on the effect of meaningful communication on donor retention and gift value.

Morning Seminar - 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

  • In lieu of a morning Fundamentals Session, Penelope Burk, President of Cygnus Applied Research, Inc., will be presenting a seminar titled "Communication is the Ask".

  • The seminar offers practical advice on how to connect more effectively with donors in an age of information overload.

  • Developed from Penelope Burk's groundbreaking research on the causes of and remedies for high donor attrition, the seminar explains what donors need to know and explores how not for profits can become masters of their own messages.

  • Registration for the seminar is managed by Cygnus Applied Research, Inc.

  • AFPOC Members will be given a special discount on the seminar fee.

  • Your discount code is "AFPOC".
